My Mission is to Protect and Restore Your Most Precious Memories & Moments.

  1. Tapes deteriorate and some tapes will suffer from sticky shed.
Sticky-shed syndrome is a condition that affects magnetic audio tapes. It occurs due to the deterioration of the binders in the tape, which hold the ferric oxide magnetizable coating to its plastic carrier or the thinner back-coating on the outside of the tape. This degradation renders the tape unusable. When a tape has sticky-shed syndrome, you might notice tearing sounds, sluggish behavior, and screeching or squeaking sounds when playing it. Dusty, rusty particles can also accumulate on the tape guides and heads. Some tape manufacturers inadvertently used unstable binder formulations, leading to this issue.
  2. Mold growth on tapes. It’s essential to address it promptly. Mold growth can damage VHS tapes, rendering them unplayable.
    1. **Why Mold Occurs:**
    – **Moisture:** Mold needs moisture to thrive. Even when stored in an attic or closet, VHS tapes can absorb humidity from the air, especially in regions with high ambient humidity.
    – **Nutrients:** Dust provides nutrition for mold. Shed skin cells and other organic matter in dust serve as food sources.
    – **Temperature:** Mold grows comfortably between 60-80°F (15-27°C), which aligns with typical household temperatures.
    2. **Types of Mold:**
    – Common molds found on VHS tapes include:
    – **Penicillium**
    – **Cladosporium**
    – **Aspergillus**
    3. **Damage to VHS Tapes:**
    – Mold releases enzymes that break down dust and organic matter. Unfortunately, these enzymes also damage the delicate magnetic tape within the cassette.
    – Some mold strains even feed directly off the tape itself.
  • Preservation: Once your home movies are digitized, they will no longer degrade over time.
  • Restoration: Faded or damaged home movies can be repaired automatically with software. Color can be renewed, and parts of a video can be stitched together.
  • Ease of Duplication: The digitized versions can be copied with the click of a button to make extra backups or share with family members.
  • Instant Cataloging: Using keywords and tagging, you can organize and search the new files on a computer, online cloud site, smartphone, or tablet.
  • Social Media Sharing: Upload digitized memories to social media sites or create new movies to watch with family and friends, complete with animated transitions, music, and narration.
  • Family History: Preserving family events isn’t just for your enjoyment but also for future generations. Once your movies are digitized, they can be seen long after you’re gone.
